Within our lives, time is a very precious commodity. We never know how much time our life span has been allocated until our time on earth ceases to exist. Therefore, we should enjoy every moment of time that we have and pick an avocation that will allow us to do so.
I was very fortunate at a young age to serve our country as an unarmed aeromedical helicopter pilot in Vietnam--better known as Dustoff. We were a unique group of young men, pilots, medics and crewchiefs. In the ten year war, those who actively flew Dustoff missions numbered less than 3000. There were many support personnel but those who flew on a 24/7 basis were few in number. The experience gained flying those missions has been an immeasureable influence on my life and the paths that I followed.
The book that I have written and the second one I have presently in draft document the experience of crews--more from my perspective than from that of others. I have tried to represent those medics and crewchiefs who flew in the back of our aircraft, the unsung heroes, who followed the pilots through the gates of hell and back. Many crews gave their lives in an attempt to save others. I was fortunate, I survived and therefore try to enjoy every moment given to me.
