I was very fortunate at a young age to serve our country as an unarmed aeromedical helicopter pilot in Vietnam--better known as Dustoff. The Vietnam War left scars on this nation that will never heal. Veterans were scorned, rejected for employment and many have died early due to disesase or by other means. Nonetheless, I am proud of my service as I was honored to fly and serve with a very a unique group of young men, pilots, medics and crewchiefs. In the ten year war, those who actively flew Dustoff missionson a 24/7 basis numbered less than 3000. Our casualty rate was 33% but yet we were able to extract nearly one million soldiers from the grasp of the grim reaper. The experience gained flying unarmed helicopter medical evacutaion missions has been an immeasureable influence on my life and the paths that I followed.
In 2003, I completed my first book entitled DUSTOFF which is available through this web page. Even though the stories, trials and tribulations were my own, I worked to fully represent, in my writings, the courageous deeds of my fellow medics and crewchiefs. These brave 'fools' flew in the back of the helicopter, followed the pilots through the gates of hell and back and never flinched in the face of death.
Never in the future will the deeds of these young men ever be surpassed!
