Dustoff Mission Presentation

The MOAA presentation that is in a PowerPoint 2003 format is one of many public presentations that I have given at book signings and for fraternal, social, military organizations. The audio cockpit recording is from the mission contained in the presentation. Late in my Vietnam tour, we figured out that we could hook a cassette recorder into our radio communications bus bar and record all of the internal and external communications that took place in our cockpit. This is one of those that we captured performing a night non-secure hoist mission without a gunship escort. By company regulation, Dustoff crews were required to have an armed escort when going into unsecured [hot--under enemy fire] landing zones and completely required during night hoist missions. We 'violated' this regulation on a regular basis. If gunships were on site, great. If they were enroute, we would wait depending on situation at hand. If they weren't available, we took the calculated risk of flying the mission. Some times the crews decision to do so was a fatal mistake. But then flying Dustoff could be fatal on a routine mission.
